 KIWANIS CLUB OF BROCKTON

                                                                  May 2009

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hi,

This past year has flown by. We only have 3 more meetings before our summer break.  At our June 8th meeting we will welcome our Scholarship winners. It would be nice if all of us could come and be part of the evening as we congratulate two Brockton High seniors.

Unfortunately, we may have a couple of members who cannot participate next year.  Two of them for the best reason anyone could have – giving birth to new future members.

Please remember to bring a friend that may be interested in joining whenever you can.  There are so many people out there with great ideas.  I know we can’t be the only ones, right?

Hope to see you soon.    -  Connie J

BROCKTON CLUB NEWS and NOTES

We have thought about some meeting ideas for next year where members are having difficulty attending meetings.  We have discussed telephone conferencing or doing an e-meeting where members would go online at a particular time and have a meeting that way.  More discussions will take place on this, if you have any input, please email Connie at callmeconnie@comcast.net

Spiral Wishing Well:  If you know of where we could place one where there is a lot of foot traffic to publicize our Club, please email or call Connie or Nancy.

We also have one wishing well we can “rent” out to other organizations or groups for fundraising purposes.  We split the donations with the other organization/group.  We would be interested in partnering with another Kiwanis Club also.

BICYCLE SAFETY RODEO

We will be conducting a bicycle safety rodeo on Saturday, May 30 for the Brockton Daisy and Brown troops.  We will have about 75 girls going through the activities at the Hancock School parking lot on Pearl Street.  We will need as many Kiwanis members as possible to help out.

RIF, BUG and TERRIFIC Kids programs:

We will participate in BUG at the Brookfield School again this year.

RIF regained funding and we will distribute books at the BB Russell and the Brookfield.

TERRIFIC Kids is at the Keith School for the Transitional Kindergarten classes.

Club Donations:

This month we are collecting non-perishable food items for the local food pantries.  Please bring your items to any meeting.

Fundraising Updates:

Ornaments:

Brockton City Hall keepsake ornaments are $5.00 each.  They are not dated and would be a nice gift for any current or former Brocktonian as a remembrance.  Contact us at

Kiwanisclubofbrockton@comcast.net

or call Nancy or Connie if you would like to purchase one.  Everyone who has seen the design loves it.  The ornament is gold with a 3-D etched city hall in the center and our “K” hanging from the top.

WEBSITE:

Remember to check our website for updates on the activities:   www.brocktonkiwanis.org.

Also, if you have an email and would like to be added to the Kiwanis e-mail list, please email Nancy at nancyk76@comcast.net.

DUES:

Invoices for the 2009-10 dues will be going out in August with a due date of Sept. 15.

New Members:
We continue to send out letters and membership packets to potential members.  If you know someone who may be interested in Kiwanis, please give Connie or Nancy his/her name and address, and she will mail information on Kiwanis and our club in particular.

Other Opportunities for Kiwanis Members:

BICYCLE SAFETY RODEO

We will be conducting a bicycle safety rodeo on Saturday, May 30 for the Brockton Daisy and Brown troops.  We will have about 75 girls going through the activities at the Hancock School parking lot on Pearl Street.  We will need as many Kiwanis members as possible to help out.

 Kiwanis Education Corner:

Each month we will give you some information about Kiwanis International so that our members will know more about the organization we are part of.  The website www.kiwanis.org has a great deal of information for members and clubs.

Leadership Matters

Every month I send out a communication to some of the district leadership in which I always leave at least a little space for talking about things I know about, simply because I’m at headquarters, that they may find interesting.  I thought some of the Kiwanians in the blogosphere may also find some of this information interesting so I will occasionally be posting these nuggets our here in the leadership matters blog.

  • As of April 1st, the Michigan District is leading all North American districts in growth.
  • Last month we asked clubs if they supported 4-H in some way and 11% responded in the affirmative.
  • The month before, we asked our clubs if they participate with, or support, the Boy Scouts of America and 29% responded that they do.
  • 990 filing is required by every club in the US.  Although there is no penalty for filing late, if you don’t file within three years you can lose your 501c4 tax status.
  • We’ve opened 25% more new clubs to date than we did this time last year
